During Operation Dragoon (Invasion of Southern France August 1944) the 3rd ID used blanket rolls in lieu of haversacks. The blanket roll consisted of a shelter half, wool blanket, and shelter half rope for a sling over the shoulder. Personal items were kept in the blanket roll. Personal items and k-rations were also kept in the lightweight gas mask bag.
